Musikinstrumenten-Museum This museum (MIM) belongs to the Staatliches Institut für Musikforschung Preussischer Kulturbesitz (State Institute for Musical and Musicological Research - SIM)
It functions as both a research institution of great benefit to instrument-makers and musicians, as well as an historical center illustrating the evolution of European music from the sixteenth to the twentieth century. The museum's 32,000 square feet of exhibition space spread over three floors. The exhibition shows European musical instruments from the 16th to the 20th century.The museum possesses an extraordinary array of over 3000 instruments
Among a wide collection of rare violins a 1703 violin made by Antonio Stradivari and a large viola by the brothers Amati dated 1619 are particularly valuable. It is the aim of the museum to show visitors the uniqueness of facture and sound characteristic of old instruments.
