Gendarmenmarkt The Gendarmenmarkt is is one of the most beautiful squares in Berlin, and the site of the Konzerthaus (Schauspielhaus) and the Deutscher Dom (German Cathedral), the Französischer Dom (French Cathedral).
The current name is derived from the Regiment Gens d'Armes who had their stables here from 1736 to 1773. The centre of the Gendarmenmarkt is crowned by a statue of Germany's poet Friedrich Schiller. The square was created by Johann Arnold Nering at the end of the seventeenth century as the Linden-Markt and reconstructed by Georg Christian Ungerin 1773. It was badly damaged in the Second World War; on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the Prussian Academy of the Sciences (Akademie der Wissenschaften), it was renamed "Platz der Akademie," but its previous name was restored in 1991.
